Ian Bell at Pickering Museum Village
Noted musicologist/historian/performer
Ian Bell entertained Backwoods members with tunes on 19th
century instruments before gathering them together for an old
time round of temperance songs and reform songs from from the
time of William Lyon Mackenzie. Backwoods members – all
entirely sober and upstanding – gave eager voice to
"I'll drink no more gin sling/I'll drink no sling made of
gin" and sang with gusto the anthem decrying the
pampered life of the upper class in the mid-1800s –
"I'll be a To – ory, I'll be a To – ory, I'll
be a To – ory in Upper Canada!!"

Music in the Thomson Homes: A lecture
demonstrated with music.
Noted musicologist/historian/performer
Ian Bell delights in the music rooted in the fields and
townscapes of Ontario. His repertoire includes old songs and
ballads, Celtic/Canadian dance tunes and many original
compositions. Ian performs on guitar, button accordion,
harmonica, mandolin and occasionally bagpipes. Mr. Bell will
illuminate twenty some years of Tom Thomson's growth into
adulthood as he and his family make music-first in Claremont
and then in Leith and Owen Sound. This look at Tom Thomson
through the lens of the music of his time, provids a new
perspective. Tom often spoke of the colour harmonies of his
pieces. You will discover the harmonies of his youth. During
Ian Bell's school programs he often shared his love of
traditional music with topics such as: "Breathe life into
Canadian history", "Celebrating our past through
songs, dance, music and humour" and "Old-time Ontario
Step Dancing"-topics which are bound to come up during his
music lecture.
