Linda Jansma Juror’s Comments One hundred and eighty entries and I could choose sixty. I did an initial walk-through and felt confident. I started to hand works that would not be included to one of many attentive volunteers. After the first round I asked, rather triumphantly, how many more I had to cull. The reply: “One hundred”. While making the final selection was a daunting task, I feel that submitting work is the more intimidating undertaking. By exposing a private passion in a public forum, artists are taking a risk, the largest being that of rejection of course. And that takes it back to me. Would this exhibition have been larger if there had been more space? Undoubtedly. There were many works that I handed over to the volunteers with great reluctance, although, in the end, it was a good thing that this was not an easy job as the resulting exhibition shows. As for the works that remained: the artists should be proud of pushing boundaries with mediums, format, composition and colour. Presentation is vital and there were some works that I stood in front of and couldn’t help but say, “That frame is absolutely perfect”.

The artist of the Best in Show should be proud of painting a portrait that would not leave me alone; this double image is as haunting as it is well-painted and it’s good to know that such talented artists reside in Durham Region. The PineRidge Arts Council has organized an exiting juried exhibition opportunity for artists as well as viewers and should be congratulated for their efforts. I appreciate participating in the 9th Annual Juried Show and wish the Council and the artists all the best for the future.
